We visited two of the cemeteries while we were in France in February: The American and German cemeteries. For the American cemetery go here. The German cemetery has an interesting circular design. The graves are not covered in earth. Instead, they're kept above-ground in tombs. Walking around there, we saw people had left flowers and notes on some of the tombs. There was a German family there, too at the time we visited. The mother spoke to us in English for a second after I picked up one of the English pamphlets.

The entrance is designed to bring a stark contrast between light and dark. On the walls are appeals to remember the lives of these soldiers as fellow human beings. Most of the graves show ages below 20. It was suprising to see the occasional infantry aged 55 or even higher.

The circular tomb structure. Each alcove had rows and rows of tombs. Around 10,000 soldiers are buried here.
