There
are plenty of places to visit in the area; some of them are detailed
below. We're planning on visiting some of them on Sunday after the
wedding, so people can come with us if they want. If you like middle age castles and even whole cities in that style (where people still live) there's Mont St Michel, Saint Malo, Combourg Castle, and even an old Caslte of William the Conqueror in Caen. For historic World War II sites, there's La Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach, and a famous WWII museum in Caen called le memorial de Caen. There are also a few WWII cemeteries for people who want to see the end result of all these battlefields that you can visit. Scroll down for some info and links on each of them.
Saint Malo is a walled port city and is well known for it sea food restaurants. If you're not a sea food lover, there are still some "crêperies" where you can eat some "galettes". Take a good walk on the ramparts and in the picturesque streets. Saint Malo is located at about 30 minutes driving from Dol-de-Bretagne. Rennes is a great city with a large architectural heritage. Enjoy a fresh beer at one terrasse... Rennes is at 50 minutes from Dol-de-Bretagne.
The "chateau de Combourg" is a castle from the 11th century located at 15 minutes from Dol-de-Bretagne.
La
Pointe du
Hoc is located just near Omaha beach, one of the
principal
landing
points during the World War II. The site is filled with large bomb
craters and some German bunkers. The site is often compared
to the moon surface but with grass. The beach is located at
2 hours
driving from Dol-de-Bretagne. One of the most interesting
museum about the WWII in Normandy is by far
le memorial de Caen (Caen is at 1:30 from Dol-de-Bretagne).
